I am in the process of re-doing/cleaning up my resume. It's almost 3 pages long and I know that I have to cut a lot of un-necessary stuff.
My questions are:
What jobs should I not mention?
Do I include the cashier/food service jobs I held as a teenager?
How old is too old of a job to include?
Also, at many points in time, I have held 2 or more jobs. Most were seasonal/temp, and lasted less than 6 months. Should those be included? Or should I only include the primary job.

I have friends that tell me I should have multiple versions of my resume.
1. A lite version that covers only the jobs I have long work history with.
2. A detailed version that covers even the most basic and seasonal of jobs.
3. Several versions that target certain jobs.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Your friends are right about needing several versions of your resume that target specific jobs. You should only include the jobs that are most relevant to the position you are applying for, but if that leaves huge gaps in the timelines on your resume, lump the information about the irrelevant jobs together in the cover letter. Your resume should be a maximum of 2 pages.

You don't mention what other types of work or volunteer work you have done or which jobs you are applying for. If you are applying for a job as an accountant, you will want to mention the jobs with cash-handling skills. But if you are applying for a teaching position, the fast food/cashier jobs would not be immediately relevant, but you can mention your ability to keep track of order information, math skills, organization, time management, etc. that would be helpful in a teaching job.

A good employment counsellor can help you revamp your resume. They can be found at government-run agencies and community colleges. There are also many helpful books at the local libraries.

Don't go back more than ten years unless it is specific to the job that you are applying for. Do mention the months along with the years. Omitting the months can make it look like you are trying to hide something.

Don't mention your side jobs, unless they are specific to the job you are applying for - having your years layered due to holding down more than one job actually makes the resume look more unlegible and confusing than makes you look talented. So main jobs mostly/only.

Don't mention any jobs you had before the age of 18.

There is NO reason a resume should be 3 pages long unless you are a project manager and you are listing your projects.

Job duties are assumed. Meaning if you are a cashier, it's understood that you take peoples cash, provide good customer service, close the till, etc. Don't list that daily job duty stuff. Instead list 2-3 bullets (not paragraphs) of what you did that was above and beyond. Example: trained 6 employees, covered for manager when he/she was out of town, things like that. If you bullet every position based on 3 acheivements you should be able to cut 2 pages off your resume.

Have a complete work history page ready to go in case the interviewer has questions, but just names of companies, title you had and months/years only. Again, your title will cause assumed job duties and that is fine.

You can have multiple resumes ready to go, but in all honesty most people reading the resumes can read through that, they are looking for something specific that probably isn't very clear in the job ad. I recommend you customize your cover letter towards the job. Especially if you do an acheivement based resume. Achievements will get you further that a skill based resume any day!

stay on 1 page. The more recent, the more details.

old jobs, if only a few weeks or temporary just clutter things up.

eg. Dec 2003- June 2005- Temp jobs
If they want more dteails, they'll ask.

On a sperate piece of paer you may want to list evreything, just in case they ask, but they probably won't.

Suggestion" go to a bookstore, and buy a book on resumes. Look in the business section.

Your resume should present your qualifications to your prospective employer. If you are applying for a physician's assistant position, your employer isn't going to care that you washed 20 dishes per minute or 2000. On the other hand, your prospective employer isn't going to want huge gaps in your resume. The best tip is to gloss over the non-pertinent experience and delve into the more pertinent history. You should be able to drastically reduce your finished resume(s) and still demonstrate your qualifications.
