The concept of "right to information" means, generally, that people should know whats going on. It is often used to refer to transparency (rather than secrecy) in government.
The benefit, in a democracy (or republic), is that the public can make informed decisions about who to elect, and who to support. Absent that, all we have is blind trust and propoganda.

by using rti one can access information which hitherto was classified as confidential, by using rti one can access information and know why contracts were awarded the way the were, why certain selection was done and so on. it is a way to bring more transparency in the way governments work! for example using rti someone in pune found out that the mayor had used official vehicle far more than allowed to him to visit places that were not needed as part of the official work. so he was made to pay about 2 lakh rupees for the petrol bills incurred on these trips!
rti basically is a tool to keep a check on government functioning. it will work effectively when more citizen ask questions based on rti
one problem though is that many departments in the government have asked for exemption from rti, mainly DMRC and UPSC!

What does Right to Information mean?
It includes the right to -
inspect works, documents, records.
take notes, extracts or certified copies of documents or records.
take certified samples of material.
obtain information in form of printouts, diskettes, floppies, tapes, video cassettes or in any other electronic mode or through printouts.[S.2(j)]
it definitely benefits to a commoner, gives him accessibility to documents whenever & wherever he is in doubt about certain actions of the government. as long as its not misused its a boon.
