Everyone used to lick stamps once upon a time. I used to, but of course they are all self adhesive now. There was some talk about the glue, but I can't recall what it was all about. You would probably have to lick a few hundred stamps a day to ingest any harmful products.

According to your ?, you probably are quite young?? or not. Anyway, I've been licking & affixing for over 50 years and I haven't had anything fatal happen to me. And I might add, my mind is still pretty sharp. Life is too short to worry about stuff people have been doing for decades. People hear so much crap, that it literally turns them into obsessive freaks about health. Years back people drank & smoked like there was no tomorrow, and most of them lived well into their early 90'S!
I swear, the booze, beer & butter saved many a life.

I haven't seen a stamp that wasn't self-adhesive in years, but I'm pretty sure that envelope glue is one of those things that has to be non-toxic. There are things that look like bingo markers that you can use to wet envelopes, though, if you have a billion things to mail or you're really that worried.

It's what everyone used to do - before the world went to @#%&. It's no longer safe - even in a new box. Use a sponge or a wet paper towel. Seinfeld had an episode where George's fiance died because of too much of the chemical - don't know if it's really possible though.

no, I always use water. but if you do lick, the health risks are practically negligible as you are ingesting a very small amount each time, unless you're someone who does that the whole day, every day.
