You have to understand a bit about prevention in order to get it under control.

It's caused by bacteria alright but since fungus needs a warm dark damp place to grow, he has to eliminate that. This means, breathable shoes. Ones that have synthetic uppers are bad, ones with leather uppers are good.

Cotton socks. Cotton breathes well. After showers and workouts all moisture should be wiped from the feet - especially in between the toes. He shouldn't walk around barefoot since bacteria and fungus can spread on surfaces. This is why, at gyms and public pools, people should never be barefoot.

Some of the same medications that cure yeast infections in women (miconazole, clotrimazole) can cure foot fungus. Use a medicated *powder* though. He should put it on before putting on his socks and shoes for the day. Also, soaking his feet in a drying solution of aluminum acetate (Burrow's solution or Domeboro's solution ) should help.

If he tries all that and his symptoms don't clear up or for any reason get worse, he should try a prescription from your family doctor.

Soak his feet in warm water with tea tree oil added and then dry well. Pick him up some generic athletes foot cream at the store in the morning. Also be sure he wears white cotton socks until this clears up.

Aqua is correct...black walnut is the best herbal remedy for fungus. It is available in extract form. Make a tea and let the feet soak. Cotton socks and allowing the feet to breath. Might think of new shoes once the problem is taken care of. Disinfect shower every time you use it. It is also good to drink some black walnut tea..this will help incase it has gone systemic. (if not allergic to walnuts of course)

I know this works because I've had it before.

Get a black walnut, crack it open and use the juice from the walnut on the fungus.

I will warn you though, it will sting and hurt for a while because the juice is killing it off. So just be patient...do it everyday until it is gone.

Also, be careful with the juice, it stains everything it touches!

Proponents of urine therapy claim that urine is very effective at killing athlete's foot. Urea, the "active ingredient" in urine, is already used in many drugs and treatments made by pharmaceutical companies to treat athlete's foot. This controversial treatment method recommends urinating on the infected area once a day in the shower. According to supporters, urine therapy not only kills existing fungi, it prevents new fungi from growing in the infected area.

If you ask me, they're extracting the urine!

I have found that baking soda helps. Just put it in the shoe, they still may sweat yet they will not be as odorous.
