the true meaning of "dumpster diving" is when you actually go into the dumpster and search through it for true articles of any sort of "value"; whether this be cans or bottles or money or antiques, FOOD or as you know each person has their own standard as to what is and isn't considered "trash" to them.
I personally will not go dumpster diving as it is very dangerous. Even with protective gloves, you still run the risk of getting cut on your arms, legs and other parts of the body and getting infected with disease or short term illness.
My friend in high school her father would practice dumpster diving on a regular basis. On one such occassion he cut his hand pretty good. They apparently did not have any sort of good Insurance or he simply was stubborn and did not wish to see a Doctor and left the cut with only a bandage. I remember it "oozed" for awhile. Finally it left a large "boil" that remained there for as long as i could remember.
However, i suppose it is relatively safe overall. Many people seem to do it and be fine. I do not seem to have to jump in the dumpster myself to be able to find things of value. I think your best bet is to drive around neighborhoods on trash day and see what people have sitting on their curbs early in the morning that doesn't really fit into the trash. You'd be surprised at how many people expect and know that "trash" won't fit or won't be taken by the garbage man but that a "diver" or "scavenger" will come by and grab it up.
Also, go into an apartment community and check their garbage containers! Oh yeah! They have the best finds and often times you don't even have to "jump inside" their dumpsters either. When i lived in apartments when people moved they set stuff right outside of the dumpster to be picked up. The last placed i lived there was a couple who came from outside the complex to "dive" all the time.
Here are a couple links on "dumpster diving".

I hatehatehate to admit it, but I used to work at a Costco store, and hey would throw stuff in the trash WAY before the expiration date. my boss told us that that's the way corporate wanted it, but that we were free to "dumpster dive' anytime. Well, we had a special dumpster just for food, and a couple of co-workers, the boss and I got together with a truck and just about emptied the thing out! I know it sounds so trashy and cheap, but when you're only making $8.20 an hour free food is awesome! We didn't have to buy groceries for the duration of our employment, we never got sick or dirty food, and my family saved up the grocery money for things we really needed.

Ha Ha Ha.... I got a set of coffee tables from the dumpster when I was 18. and a rocking chair.... oh and two lamps. If I hadn't needed them for my apartment, I probably could have sold them.... I was kinda embarassed at first, but then a really cute neighbor helped me carry them in and told me about his first apartment furniture being WAY worse... lol

Well my fiance used to do that with his family as a kid. They find all sorts of stuff. Then they would go junking. Where you drive around rich areas on garbage day and see what they tossed out. What the hell, why not. Best of luck

not really dumpster driving, but one day i was driving to school, some kids were playing baseball, and one of them hit the ball so hard, if flew right over the fence and landed right in front of my car. i stopped, got out, took the ball, ran back to my car and took off. hahahahaha
by the way, they were a bunch of teenagers, and i'm a college student. hehehehe
