Ok... I have seen people asking this question over and over again! Are people completely stupid? How many times do people have to tell other people that breeding your pets isnt a good idea?!?!?!? I actually saw a question where someone was asking what to do when a dog goes into labor. The dog was already pregnant!!!!!!!! Don't you think they would have researched that before they started breeding?

Sorry, I am just so irritated by people. Why do people feel the need to so irresponsible?

Someone made a comment about people breeding. Trust me I have some strong opinions about that too.

And, I understand sometimes accidents happen and I am fine with people disagreeing with my point of view but that is just how I feel.

Oh yeah.. and it is my business when there are so many over flowing shelters that my tax dollars have to pay for because people dont know how to use common sense! You can say it is people right to breed their pets all you want, but go to your local shelter and see all of the abandoned mutts with health problems and behavioral problem. Go on the day of the week when the put down hundreds of cats and dogs and then throw in piles and discard the bodies like trash.

Go ahead, its easy for you to tell me that it is their decision. If it helps you sleep at night to ignore the problem, go right ahead!

As a responsible breeder myself, I both agree and disagree with your comments/question.

Naturally, all dogs should fall within AKC standards and be a quality specimen. We do health testing on both male & female before even considering breeding. If results come back favorable, then we plan a breeding.

There is minimal to no profit in purebred dog breeding. With all the health testing (some tests only need to be done once in a lifetime) a first litter (from pre-breeding health testing to 8-9 wk old pups) will cost about $6,000 to produce, and that is without incidentals.

I have had dobermans for 26 yrs, and have produced 3 litters. It is in our contract that if they family can no longer keep the dog (regardless of age or situation), we will gladly take the dog back. We rescue our own if the need arises!

If you don't rescue, you shouldn't breed!

Two of the biggest problems with irresponsible breeding is:

1: "Oh she's just so adorable, wouldn't she have beautiful babies?" WRONG She may be cute, but she may also be a carrier of something that will kill her in 5 years and it will be passed along to her offspring.

2. "Hey, nice dog...my buddy has a female he's looking to breed...wanna stud him out?"
Again, no idea of the health of the animals, and in this case 'you've got a male, I've got a female, let's have puppies' with no more thought put into it than that.

3. OK I LIED there's obviously more than 2 This isn't just targeted at irresponsible breeders, but irresponsible dog owners in general!
Dog running loose/at large, breeding at will. Female comes home after running the neighborhood for 3 days and 63 days later drops 8 puppies.....'how did this happen?' "what now"

I know there are many purebred dogs in shelters, but we can thank the Back Yard Breeders and Puppymills for that. They don't care who their pups go to or what happens to them. They're in it souly for the money!

Sorry, didn't mean to rant on so much!

I have four dogs and six cats. They're all from shelters or picked up off the street. I'm DEFIANTLY not pro-breeding. I try to give people a push in what I feel is the right direction when appropriate. At the very least, I try to give them something to think about.

One the other hand, some people can get pretty hostile toward the "breeders". Since most people tend to dismiss the opinions of people who are hostile towards them, I think the hostility actually hurts the cause. It's human nature not to believe in the people who think the worst of you.

I work in an animal hospital and have people call with questions about breeding every day. Not all of them are stupid, money hungry people who don't care about their pets. Some of them ARE misguided, though. Many people are willing to reconsider their plans when you fill them in on the potential negatives of breeding their pets.

The people that do decide to breed aren't necessarily people I admire, but they aren't exactly tossing puppies into oncoming traffic or alligator pits, either. They may not be perfect, but I don't believe they deserve a lot of what they get around here.

My guess would be these people are only breeding their dogs to make a profit off of them by selling their puppies. They don't care if the animal is in the best condition as long as they get some $$ out of the pups. Then again you have to consider some of the ppl asking questions on here are children and they have never dealt with animals having offspring.

People should ONLY breed two dogs together if they are breeding them to BETTER the breed temperament, health, conformation, and overall dispositional correctness. With reputable breeders, their breeding stock has been bred by people that have had high amounts of experience in the certain breed, not only in the breed, but in canine genetics, and have done their part in studying specimens and individuals of the breed. There is more to breeding than just getting puppies out of it!

I totally agree with you. I wish that all of those "IT"S MY RIGHT AS A PET OWNER" people could have a chance to observe what goes on in thousands of shelters nationwide on "euthanasia day". It is heart breaking and there seems to be no end to it.
Check this out, all of you who still think they must breed because they can, beware, some of these images are not easy to watch:

What really makes me mad is the people who think they are actually helping pets by breeding. They think that they are preserving the breed!!
Non-sense. All with the exception of a few breeds, dogs are not rare. They are not endangered, they don't need to be bred.

Breeding a dog is not irresponsible. If someone wants to breed their pet, that is their business. Not near as bad as single woman bringing children into the world an expecting someone else to take care of them. Usually the taxpayer.

I totally agree with you, I think people think it is not that big of a deal to breed dogs, how ridiculous is that?? It is a MAJOR committment and responsiblity that should not be taken lightly!!

"The best laid plans of mice and men often go awry". Is that enough said? Sometimes, even though you are trying to take precautions to prevent unwanted pregnancies, an animal gets pregnant. That does not mean the people are irresponsible.
