Insects can definitely wreak havoc on electronics.
I bought a car stereo from a friend that didnt work for $10. I took it to a local electronics shop and got it fixed for $5. There was a cockroach inside that fried a contact, it took a wire and some solder to fix, but yes it can damage your computer!

As much as I know it depends to the type of ant! Most ants don't have anything to do with electronic devices... but they are interested to silicon itself which I don't think in laptops there is any visible or accessible silicon at all.
The only damage (with least possibility) is to the lens of your DVD or CD-ROM drive!

Yes, the ants can cause damage because electricity "could" flow through them. This could create a short circuit situation.
Other damage could happen if they get into your CD drive.
I highly suggest that you get your system to a professional and have them take it apart and clean out the food source (crumbs, koolaid, soda, etc...) from your keyboard.

they could get into some electric powered connection and fry it yet I doubt it. perhaps spray some canned air all up contained in the vents, ports and contained in the keyboards. save it remote from ants.
