Actually, I think the bigger problem is the trend for things that were once acknowledged to be ridiculously over-priced (like medical bills for the uninsured) to be sold off to collection agencies.
But even in the case where we're not talking about collection agencies, yes, I think bill collectors can STILL be the problem.
Like when I've mailed my car payment the week before it's due (on the 21st of every month) and they start calling me on the 22nd. I've never missed a single payment, never even been late enough to incur a late fee (there's suppose to be a 10-day grace period, it's written in the contract.) Still, they start calling on the 22nd. And I mean to the tune of 3-5 times a day.
I had to write them an official letter to stop harassing me at work so I could actually get my work done. Now, mind you, if I were late... even 15-30 days late, I could understand. But seriously. The NEXT &(*&^(*&^ DAY?
I will say one thing for them, though... they've motivated me to get COMPLETELY out of debt. To hell with just paying it on time, because clearly that isn't good enough.

Some bill collectors are rude and mean.
Some bill collectors are very helpful.
My daughter is a bill collector and she has said some very hurtful things even thou she has been privy to the reasons behind the unpaid bills. At one point she said I shouldn't have a cell phone. With as much running around as I do and time spent in hospitals and other places the bill collectors would never be able to reach me if I didn't have a phone and I wouldn't have the opportunity to pay the bills I do pay by phone. But she says a cell phone is some kinds of luxury. I believe it is a necessity and if my computer weren't hooked to the phone I'd cut the land line. But it is not the Bill collectors fault you don't have the money to pay your bills.

I think that the people who don't pay their bills are more of a problem than the bill collectors. If people were able (or responsible enough) to pay bills, there wouldn't be a need for bill collectors.

They are a big problem! we are on the do not call list and we have had calls starting at 8am in the morning for the past 3years for someone (2people) who must have had the number before us. We tell them they dont live here, they stop for awhile and start again. We finally havent had any lately, as I have been keeping track of who calls and how many times, and asking for their name. I hope they are done as I work 2nd shift and sleep from3am_-11:30 -12noon. If it continues I will contact someone! I am not usually short temperd, but hen I pay my bills, and they call and act like I know these people, and i tell them I dont, and Im tring to get my sleep to work and pay my bills they should believe me and not call back. hey are my problem and I pay all my bills on time!
