Even if there weren't any relics left to use as props, couldn't they have used an artist's interpretation who was guided by a historian who had knowledge of the culture of that area based on archaelogical finds?

I wouldn't quite go with Egyptian, however it did take place during the early Bronze Age, and we only know what the ruins look like, not the actual buildings in full though.
