As Hungary has been a member of the European Union since 2004, I think it would be best to compare the living standard to fellow member states. The average wages and the overal living standard is closest to Portugal and Spain, which means the lowest within the first 12 members of the EU, however, much better than in developing countries or in recent additions to the EU, like Romania. The taxes are the highest in Hungary, but the wages are still significantly below in comparison to UK, France or Germany. Most Hungarians are deeply in debt resulting from the fact that over 90% of Hungarians own their homes as opposed to renting them. It is very typical for a young couple in Hungary to take on a 20-25 year long mortgage, which makes them the least mobile active workers within Europe. That's why Hungarians are not flooding the job markets in other countries, they simply tie themselves to their homes. The current and previous governments have been busy filling up their own pockets with money and as a result, the economy and the health care system is in desperate need of serious and immediate fixing. The population is aging, there are less and less kids to pay for the increasing number of pensioners (I guess that's a typical European problem). Unemployed rata is around 7.5%, which is better than in many other European countries. Despite all the challenges, I believe that Hungary is a good place to live. Many foreigners who live/work in Hungary have said that they find work/life balance easier to maintain and they don't really want to return to their home countries.

The standard of living in any country deppends on how much you earn. Going there on holiday, you will always be able to afford many luxuries.
My parent live there and their standard and quality of life is exceptionable. The are comfortable and have no worries.

It isn't a third world country, if that's what you mean. But if the World Bank and the IMF get their way it will be soon.
