Great question... my STAR!!
Separatism is merely an extended form of individualism. As it was essential for us to sacrifice individuality at least in part to survive, we learned to carry it to the next level of family... even that had to be sacrificed in part for survival, so we carried it to the next higher level of society and so on. Separatism is just the manifestation of 'self' in a broader context.... you can be sure that separatism would no longer be a threat to humanity if it is threatened by say an alien force or a common disaster on earth that affects us all equally!! Freedom and separatism is our nature... it is our survival instinct that unites us to the extent necessary. Truth can indeed be bitter!!!!

I'm glad you asked. It was labels. You call yourself something that not everyone belongs to and you have seperated yourself, leading to possible violence. Good examples are religions, countries, sports teams, racial bigotry. Want to overcome one? Remove the labels.
"I am not an Athenian or a Greek. I am a citizen of the world"
- Socrates
"When you call yourself an Indian or a Muslim or a Christian or a European, or anything else, you are being violent. Do you see why it is violent? Because you are separating yourself from the rest of mankind. When you separate yourself by belief, by nationality, by tradition, it breeds violence. So a man who is seeking to understand violence does not belong to any country, to any religion, to any political party or partial system; he is concerned with the total understanding of mankind."

Selfishness!. This is the root cause of all evils in the world. Everyone wants to have his/her own area, where he/she does not allow anybody to be part of that. This area can be caste, creed, wealth, gender etc
