I would like to integrate my Socials unit that is focussing on child labour into English. I would like to do literature circles, but it is difficult to find novels dealing with this topic that don't have inappropriate content and which would appeal to the boys. I have spoken to several public librarians, several teacher librarians, and pretty much everybody else I know, but I haven't found much yet. I will probably use "The Breadwinner" and "Mud City", but I still need two other books. I am aware of "Iqbal" but I think it would be a little too easy for the class. Any suggestions you have would be greatly appreciated.

David Copperfield / Charles Dickens (maybe too advanced)
Joshua's song / Joan Hiatt Harlow.
The gate in the wall / Ellen Howard
The Bobbin Girl / Emily Arnold McCully.
Iqbal : A Novel / written By Francesco D'Adamo
January 1905 / Katharine Boling
Samantha Learns A Lesson : A School Story / by Susan S. Adler
The Secret Under My Skin / Janet McNaughton.
Ten Thousand Charms / written By Leander Watts.
Turn Homeward, Hannalee / Patricia Beatty.

It is a start. Good luck....

Iqbal is a great read aloud while doing this unit. It may be easy but the story is powerful and worth presenting. I also agree with The Giver. It inspires fantastic discussions. Another choice that boys love is The Cay. Spirit Bear is also great for boys.

I remember reading SUMMER OF MY GERMAN SOLDIER about german pow in the midwest. It would helpe because i believe that you could incorporate the difference between the internment camps and pow camps and why we as people see one type as disgusting and the other type as correct.
