The Red Sox just need him to play defense. So if he can hit .240 he will keep the job all year.

In baseball, you are considered a success if you fail 7 out of 10 times. Case in point: a .300 batting average is thought to be one heck of an average. Dustin Pedroia has enough of a history with the organization that they trust he will be able to do the job. He made a serious effort to improve his performance over the off-season, as evidenced by his weight loss. I believe the same questions arose about Kevin Youkilis last year-whether or not Youkilis could make the transition to everday first baseman. He did, and I think Pedroia will provide the defense and the hits to keep his job.

Pedroia was a very solid hitter for Pawtucket and the Red Sox are still optimistic on his hitting abilities. He is young and still pretty new to the big leagues. I saw him play in several games at the end of last year. He is underwhelming at the plate. I hope he finds himself before they tire of him. Neither the Red Sox nor the Boston media are very patient.

His problem is that he's a little guy that swings for the fences every time. He's not a power hitter by any means, and will need to adjust.
That being said, if he's steady in the field, he'll get the majority of the playing time. Everyone says he's like an Adam Kennedy, and that's better than Alex Cora any day of the week.
Besides, if he can't hit, he can just call Jason Giambi for some HGH.

Red Sox don't care about 2B or SS - just stand over there and catch the ball. Big Papi and Manny handle offense.

As long he plays good defense and hits, say .260, he'll keep his job. The Sox don't need him to score. They've got plenty of offense already.
