Desktop is the thing which opens when the computer starts.It consist of icons,background,etc.
Background is the image or picture placed on desktop.

background is just the screen and light of ur computer where u can only change the color and theme and desktop is the selection or option of ur computer where you can choose the programme or operate ur programme what u want.
