I dont mind getting my hands dirty. My boyfriend has taken everything off already and I have the new heads to go on it. but my boyfriend has also taken off. I am left with doing it myself. A garage wants way too much, and a couple that I have called said they wont touch it, because someone has already had their hands it in. I am desperate. I need my car for work. Help!

This is really not a job for the novice mechanic. I could not find a 89 325E but I found an 89 325I, but I found an 87 325E. The 89 has the E30 engine, the 87 has the M20. I am assuming that you are from the US or Canada.
I while email to you the repair data I have on both of them. Verify the dat plate on the engine compartment for the right year and model.

I have a question for you before you start on this project.

I am assuming that you had to replace the head because of an overheating problem, or bad head gasket . If this is the case did you make sure that the head you are putting on is good. When BMW's overheat often they warp, and have to be planned again before you put it back on the car. Planning the head will make it flat again. Another problem is a cracked head, some cracks only appear when the engine reaches a certain temperature. In Germany a machine shop can check the head out and plan it for about 60 euro or $100 USD. If these are the reasons for the head replacement then please have the head checked out before you put it on.

I hope the 2 repair procedures may be of assistance.
Best of luck.

this is a job that is rather too hard for the beginner. Your best bet is to find someone that will loan you a Bently manual. it is pretty good and will tell you all the specs. There are a lot of tools needed. I assume you broke a timing belt? Then the pistons need to be really inspected. Setting the proper valve clearance and timing belt can be a real deal. You might check with a local dealer and see if any of the guys work at home. 300-500 would be in the ballpark cost wise if you have all of the parts. Someone else taking it apart should be no problem for a professional shop
