When you see a circle on the right hand corner of the screen it means that the film reel is being changed to the next scene.

Films are distributed in reels. Although nowadays most are on a large spindle (big reel - platter system), they used to be distributed on separate reels and run on separate projectors. The projectionist would line up each projector so they both projected to the same spot.

Each projector would have an alternate reel. When one was getting near the end the projectionist would watch for the circles. The first circle was about 5 seconds before the reel change. Upon the second circle, the projectionist would switch projectors - start the second and shut off the first.

At that point the second would be running, the third reel would be put on the first projector, and in 20 or 40 minutes, the next switch would take place, and so forth.

I saw this on "Columbo." It means you have a few seconds to switch to the next reel in the sequence.
