The Cold War covers tensions that existed between the United States and the Soviet Union. The time period lasted a little over 50 years. It is described as being a rivalry between two superpowers. A massive arms race and spending on defense sky rocked in the 80's. As the US is opposed to Communism and Socialism, ideology was a source of tension for both countries. This is an extremely simplified answer as espionage was used on both sides and military buildup caused anxiety for all parties.

Although there was disagreement between communism and capitalism during Stailin's and Lenin's rein, the real cold war started at some UN meeting after WW2. Some Soviet diplomat (kruschev?) smacked his shoe to the podium and said USSR would take over the world. After sputnik was launched into space, american's realized that they just might be able to do it.

The cold war ended when the USSR disbanded it's union.

Russia wanted Germany and all her satellite countries she aggressively took over during WWII (Poland, Hungary, etc.) The US did not want Russia taking over Europe; Germany is split in two. The US occupies West Germany; Russia takes East Germany. It escalates after that.....and the rest is history, as they say.
