Intranet is just what it says it is! It's an Internal network restricted access to only the members of that Company.

Internet, however, is Inter or between any two computers or networks or more!

For the sake of people like Saloman, may I say, that the Intranet does not "block" the Internet. It simply does not have any connection to it! You see, the Intranet allows access only to it's resources and has no connection to the Internet, ergo, no access!?

Now, as to the use of Intranet and what does it do etc?

Intranet, basically, has all the functionality of the Internet. No difference; except in what you can access there. The Intranet has only access to it's resources, nothing more, nothing less.

It's utitility is something that depends on it's application.

For example, the most common uses of Intranet are within the Office or the Schools and Colleges. Where it is used to enable the transfer the information from one workplace to the other, eliminating the need to physically make a hard copy and carry it to the person you want to communicate with. It also facilitates audio-viseo conferencing, hence, you can holding a virtual meeting or Classroom Session, without leaving your table!

The best part about the Intranet is that it brings it's users to a focus and makes them concentrate on the task at hand without distractions!?

Cheers!

Good thing I saw your question, because I have been on several Intranets in the past! Unlike the Internet, an Intranet is a personal network, like another company that you know, who gives you access to their website and information (usually they assign you a user-name and password to get into their website or Intranet). It's almost like someone giving you access to their network through a VPN (or Virtual Private Network). It's distinguished from a regular website having a password and user name to log into a site (like Hot mail), because it is usually more private and you have to be associated with the company or person who gives you special permission to access their Network with. It's good for restricting access to all kinds of users who do not need a particular service and the benefits are better security. How about another example: a popular actor or actress has a website that you can log into and check out their songs and information. Say your girlfriend or boyfriend also have a website. Would you and your partner want everyone else logging into your partner's Intranet (or personal website?).

An Intranet service is a connection of two or more computers with each other, but not necessarily with the Internet. I have an Intranet service with my wife's computer over there (point - point), and we have access to certain areas of each others' files. Saves a lot of duplication of files we both use. Businesses and Public Services have Intranets, and they can be two or three, or hundreds of computers.

The "Intranet" is just a private Internet. This is normally employed by business organisations for their Inter-office correspondence. Access to intranet will be restricted to staff of that particular organisation only. So, in a nutshell, one can say that the Intranet is a miniature version of the Internet.

From what I know, it's an internal internet service...only able to be used by a company. Like I work at a bank and I can only access our intranet at work. Does that make sense?

An intranet is a company's private network used to share information within the organization. It is separated from the internet but operates in the same manner in that data is called up from servers as well as access to other hardware such as internal mail servers, printers, etc.
