My friend was telling me about these trendy, fashionable and affordable stores like Forever 21 that sell cool-looking, but poor-quality clothing. She says that H&M might be the same: affordable and great-looking, but not the best quality. What do you think? Is their clothing quality good?

H&M is actually really decent quality. I buy it for my son and daughter and not only do they love the styles but I like that the clothes don't wear like stuff from Forever 21 and some of the other trendy shops, and my kids are young enough to really test the quality. I also have a couple of blouses and skirts from H&M and they wash and wear pretty good. I wear them alot and they still look great.

You need to scout for what in your own perception as quality clothes. Most stores offer a mixture in qualities. Sad to say that quality is depreciating as compared to the olden days. Previously, minor details in stitches are even paid with great attention. Now they uses double sided tape or worse, just let the raw edges flares and said its a new design. Look at those elastic band flare skirts! Its not on the rack many years back. But now its everywhere. Material used aren't of good quality but charges you at a hefty tag in compensating for design. Most of those design falls back to the 80. Quality comes with a price. Think about the advertisement cost, the constant changing window showcase, the gift with purchase, the overheads, and etc. They have to cover the cost and recover it as well. Part of the "quality" goes to the interior decoration and the discount gimmick to you. No complains if you are attracted to those stuff when you step into the stores. Because you pay for it.

I think they have some quality pieces that are trendy, yet they also have some not so great. I would try Old Navy, quality is betterm, but maybe not as fashion forward. Charolotte Russe and Rampage have very trend styles at decent prices.

I LOVE H&M. I found it when I was in Europe with my family but I don't live in a big city, so we don't have one, and you can't order from their website, and it makes me super sad. The quality is good, especially considering the price. I have things I bought from H&M 6 or so year ago that I still wear and love.

My wife loves H&M, and she's a fashionista. If she buys it, then it's a good bet that it will last a while.
