It still is free, you just have to join the Reserves or some military branch to get it. The other reason probably was budget and because the US is a capitalistic country. Why should we throw money at students to get a higher education if they don't value it? Those who do study hard in high school will find plenty of scholarships available to them.

Hasn't been abolished. There are now means testing, this is to charge those able to pay higher rates, the higher rates. If you don't have a 4 year degree yet, then it is still possible to get a free education through pell grants, scholarships and work study programs. Graduate degrees are another matter.

Lack of free higher education is a way for the ruling wealthy class to maintain the present power structure. Because the wealthy will always be able to send their children to higher education, it is in their best interest to prevent others from achieving free access to that education (because then their children have fewer people to compete with, both entering and after college).

It's abolish. Court decisions making states provide full services (including education at the same level) to illegal aliens made free education untenable. The taxpayer citizens were being crowded out by the non-taxpaying illegals. Everyone loses.

Same reason we abolish free everything else. $$

That, and the demand for free higher education would be so high that there's no way it could be sustainable.
