Most of us don't have them in our lives 20 years ago in Shanghai, even not many families own the TV at home at that time. But my childhood was fun with my little friends playing in the alleys ( We have a lot "Alley-Games" for kids ) ;parents took us to the park very often;we know most of the people living in the same alley or close complex and we go visit each other always;people bring their homemade food to the neighbours, chatting outside in the alley together in summer ( We don't have air-conditioning at that time either, but we don't feel as hot as today)...
Life has been changed so fast, but we also lost some fun life that we had in the past. We live in the beautiful residential complex but we don't even know the neighbour stays next to you. We play computer games, PSP, "Alley-Games" are only the memory of people at equal or older than my age.
If we don't have cinemas/movies/theaters, I would be happier to stay more with my family and travelling more with friends, outdoor activities would be more encouraged, good story novels would be popular and people would like reading more.
Pop-Corn & Potato Chips Manufacturer would be very upset; No more movie stars, they'll be fading like a flower, of course, government will loose tons of revernues and taxes from the movie industry....

on my opinoin if we didn't have the cinemas/movies/theaters, there wont be as much violence and terroist as we do today, but at the other end cinemas also help people to act more civilized and share different cultures around the world. It gives employment opportunities to around 10% of the worlds population.

Probably not more than what existed prior to their creation. Writing would have been restricted to an elite caste, entertainment would take the aspect of sports, gambling, drinking and so forth. The art of writing would have been restricted as the value of fiction was based on theatre and this is what brought writing into popular usage among the masses. You probably would have also seen a decrease in inventions and the like as imagination would have been discouraged. Not a happy place.

I would be very very sad, cause I love the cinema, especially old theatres. I would be extremely disappointed cause, well this is what my mum and I feel, when ever we go to the movies we get all excited and happy inside. I dnt know why but it makes us really happy and content. You forget about everything else and just have fun watching the movie. Good question :)

Interesting thought . . . I think that people might get hold of a movie (video or d.v.d.) and show it in their own home (garage, barn etc.) and invite others they know to watch it with them there. Maybe charge a fee ?
Now if you mean what if movies hadn't even been invented . . . There would probably still be stage performances as was before film was invented. Burlesque shows, live performance etc. People would be reading, social relating, playing games, music etc. more. . . . Personally, I still relate with friends, read, attend mini lectures, music events, socialize, etc. while still going to a movie now and then.

Well, people, especially the younger adults would probably start communing with nature again, and open their eyes to the problems we are creating for mother earth, and maybe the newer generations could fix what the older generations have been screwing up, and maybe save the world and mankind, before we wipe ourselves out!!

if we had no movies or theatres? then many people would be out of a job and people, like one of my friends fo example, would have less of a life then they do now if they are like her and always go to the movies.
and my life would change completely cuz i want to get on tv (preferably a kids show like something on disney) although thats tv not a movie...

Our lifestyles would be so different. I mean movies are like the main part of most high school dates. We would probably read more or watch tv more.

I believe that there would be an enourmous growth in the birth rate. If this scenario happens I would recommend buying stock in any (drug) company that manufactures birth control, either over the counter or prescription!
