Without getting into it in great detail.

Democrats are more socially liberal and want to place most of daily life under control of the government and use tax money to pay for it. They are usually in favor of raising taxes in order to fund more programs and redistribute wealth and believe that this is for the good of the people. They are less likely to want a strong military, preferring to use the military only for homeland defense.

Republicans are more socially conservative and usually want lower taxes and less goverment control over daily life. They believe in letting capitalism and the free market determine how wealth should be distributed and prefer that private organizations and charities deal with social problems. They are usually in favor of building up the military to protect their homeland and interests abroad as well.

All this having been said: The majority of dems and repubs are dishonest and I take just about everything any of them say with a fair amount of skepticism.
