Violent crime seems to be down. CNN seems to be forced to running holding pattern negativity instead of body counts (one of the lead stories about Iraq is the fact that Iran still doesn't think we're doing it right).

But Iranian, Syrian, U.S., and Iraqi are all talking to each other constructively.

What happens to the democrats if we are out of Iraq by 2008?

Priorityze: In what way would total control of the government by democrats be normal? That is simply historically inaccurate.

From what I can gather, we have had some success in the towns that we have billeted small bands of troops in, and some violence has decreased. But at the same time, the consensus among the generals seems to be that the militias have backed off and are gathering strength to mount new attacks at their leisure.

I think the talks are a great thing - it's about time this happened. Even if nothing concrete comes from this first meeting, it lays the groundwork for more. It would take a miracle for us to be completely out of Iraq by November '08. But I believe that even if we were, the Democrats will still take the White House. People are going to continue grumbling about the cost of this war, both in lives and dollars, for a very long time. They are suspicious of a higher corruption in the White House, especially after the Libby trial, and it just isn't long enough in the future for all of this to fade from people's minds. I think for a long time they will equate war and chaos in the Middle East with the Republicans and will vote in a Democrat with the feeling, right or wrong, that electing another Republican might lead to more of the same.

I will admit things have cooled off in Baghdad, but I have been seeing and reading reports about fighting picking up in other areas of the country.

I'm not saying you're wrong, but think about this-if you were the leader of an insurgent group and you knew you were about to be massively out gunned in a certain area and by a certain date, would you stick around or would you get the hell out of Dodge?

I'm just saying wait and see what develops.I'm hoping for the best, but I'm also cognizant of the history of this war.

shrink in deaths count kind is using that surge. Having extra boots on the floor. yet there have been 0 political progression in Iraq. that's the element of this surge. To have Iraqis make political technique. that's good element there are much less deaths in Iraq, yet that would not let us know the entire image. we will might desire to attend little extra.

Things were never bad to begin with. Yes we are able to control and secure more areas now that we have a few more troops there.

We are only talking with Iran because Iraq was going to do it without us. Keep your enemies closer.

The Dem's will take credit for pushing Bush to get out. The Dem's will take credit for all that is good. The only way to shut them up is to win the war. That would be bad for them. Remember if we lose, they told us so.

When we win the Dem's will have been wrong, and they don't want to be wrong, they don't want us to win.

It does seem to be going better. I hope so but can we be sure they are not just waiting for the supposed deadline for removal of the Democrats. Anyone with a brain would know they could wait to fall 2008 & take Iraq if deadline is in place.
They seem to fight with intelligence so I think our news has been their greatest weapon. As a Mother of an Army Officer on his way to Iraq, I find it sad that the Democrats have made it almost inpossible to win & help Iraq.

It would be welcome news to both sides if it's true, but it's a bit early to speculate.

As far as the talks go, I read there was some arguing going on - accusations and such - but again it's too early to draw any conclusions.

Trust is the big issue with the voters now.

Will it is nice to finally see our government trying a little diplomacy instead of making our military shoulder the whole load over there. Bush should be ashamed of himself for taking this long.

Could care less about what happens to the Democrats. How about what happens to the soldiers who fought and died for a LIE?!? How about worrying what happens to them?

I will tell you what happens to Republicans in office, however. The rest of them will be defeated and, finally, we can try to get this country back to NORMAL...
