We put drinks and plates over your drawings because there is limited space on a table. If the drawing is particularly phenomenal, we might make a comment on how much of a shame it is to put drinks on it, but being limited by the physical constraints of the table simply place the drink on it. As for whether or not you are supposed to draw on the table, sure why not. However you must ensure you do not grow too attached to the drawing because the bus boys will throw it away, or food may be placed on it. You are going to a restaurant after all.

I used to work at Macaroni Grill and we got this question a lot. Basically the paper is there for many reasons. One is for the opening presentation so the server can right there name upside down for the guests and make a good opening impression. Second reason it is there is for the enjoyment of guests to draw pictures while they wait for food or if they have kids (yes they have kids menus but kids always like to draw on the table more.) The last reason for the paper is because it cuts down on linen costs, but it also allows for a table to be bussed in a manner of seconds. Hoped this helped

I thought it was only the 4 and 5 year olds that were drawing pictures. Normally the waiter would not be so rude as to place a beverage on top of their drawing. Their tip depends on it after all momma bear and daddy bear would not be happy if little Johnnie or Susie were treated in this fashion.

You can but the main purpose of the paper is to save on linen cleaning, a high expense in restaurants. The main gimmick is the waitstaff writing their own name upside down.

Yeah, that's why they put paper on the tables! It's so much fun, lol. Umm....they probably just put your drinks there because there's nowhere ELSE to put them, and that's the place that they've been instructed to put them...near you.

The cups gotta go somewhere! Mostly because they don't care what you are doing, they are just trying to wait on you as fast as possible so they can get as many tips as possible. Time is money to waitstaff.
