I had two European Hamsters and i recently go two more younger ones. One of the older ones was sick, his face was puffy looking, his under and back side was wet, and he had white stuff coming from his urethra. His ears looked dry (like dry skin) and he sneezed. Unfortunalty, he passed away this morning. But now the other adult has the same signs and symptoms the old one had. What do I do!!! I don't want this one to pass away too! Please give any advice, knowledge or experiences you have.... Thanks.

I have seperated them. ANd once a week, I break down their cages and thouroughly clean them with HOT water and antibacterial soap. The vet is not open over the weekend. I called the emergency vet number and the vet said that he doesn't know much about hamsters. Most of the vets in my town handle live stock most often. What can I do for them NOW?

We had hamsters, and they got sick and their back side was staying wet also. they also got really dehydrated with this. I took them to the vet. well turns out the had what is called the wet tail in hamsters, and it causes a lot of problems. they needed antibiotics and fluids. Fixed them up pretty good, but you must remember a hamsters life expectancy is only 2 -2 1/2 years.. Hope this helps... But make sure you clean out the cage really good, put down new bedding..

Have you tried treating for wet tail yet? Also how old is the sick hamster? Most live 2 1/2-4 years. My Syrian (black bear color pattern) got just like this (without the puffy face), but even with 2 weeks of antibiotics, we had to put him down. He had started with a crusty ear that I treated with a topical antibiotic, then the next week the diarrhea hit and he also had an intestinal infection causing him to drop half his weight. From being so sick, his teeth became loose and he could no longer eat and syringe feeding wasn't working either. The night he pushed away the syringe, I knew he was ready to go and I had him put down the next evening when my vet opened. What the other one had was contagious obviously as you know now. You may have to call a vet in other towns and ask if any of them have small animal experience and go to them. I would be washing my hands every time before picking up any of them and after wards. We also keep a bottle of hand sanitizer in every room where we have cages.

I don't know what is wrong with your hamsters but obviously it is contagious because now you have a 2nd one sick with the same symptoms. I hope the 2 younger ones are in a different cage. If you can't afford a vet at least check with a well established pet store owner. They might be able to offer some help. The cage these 2 were in also needs to be sterilized completely. Ask at the store what product is best for doing that.

Sounds a very bad case of a cold or even a flu, but I don't know if hamsters can catch the flu, first thing first you should keep your newer hamsters separated from the sick hamsters, and this means take them out of the room and place them somewhere else and out of a draffy location...if they start to show signs, then take them back at once to where you had gotten them from.
Also before you handle your newer hamsters make sure you wash your hands well before touching the older hamster and do the same after you had touch the old hamster before touching your newer hamsters.
If you can try to take your hamster to a vet as soon as possible, he also sounds dehydrated which is from fever and diarrhea

Sometimes hamsters can just have a quiet few days, but there could be signs of illness. Check tail for wet-tail Check ears and eyes for signs of infection Check how much he eats Check his poos - does he have diarrhoea or constipation? Check other things like skin and breathing, anything you notice straight off If he knows no obvious signs of illness, keep an eye on him for a couple of days. If he goes off his food then possibly take him to see a vet. Sometimes hamsters either become active when you are asleep, or just have a restful few days!

You need to stop the spread of the disease.
Wash your hands before handling anything that comes in contact with the well animals.
Put the well animals in another room. NOW!!
It's a good idea to completely break down their cages and wash everything in a bleach solution.
DO THIS AWAY FROM THE SICK ONES!!

Pick up some Oasis wet tail plus tablets at Walmart and follow the directions on the pack. It is a treatment as well as a preventative measure.

Your hamster needs to see a vet. An inexpensive round of antibiotics could have saved your other one. Don't let these die too.
