As much as i love MJ...i hate how Kobe is being hated for doing the same thing MJ did...yeah ok Kobe isn't as good but hear me out before you go off on me...yeah i posted a question like this before but since most people missed out...I'll repost! AND NO THE FACTS ARE NOT MADE UP BULL@#$! LOOK AND SEE FOR YOURSELF IF YOU DON'T BELIEVE ME!! AND EVERYONE THAT SAYS MJ WAS A GREAT ROLE MODEL...HE CHEATED ON HIS WIFE TOO, MORE THAN KOBE, which would explain his divorce...YAY GREAT ROLE MODEL FOR THE KIDS!

of course, the kids who say "Jordan was the best ever and no one will ever be better than the grea tmichael jordan" (almost as if that sentence was one long word) are also people who never saw him play, especially in his early years.

Jordan was unquesitonably the biggest ball hog in history... he led the NBA in FGA a record NINE times. He finished 2nd in FGA in 1989, otherwise he would have led the league in FGA TEN years in a row.

Michael took about 23 shots per game over the course of his career... Kobe has taken 18 shots/game over his career.

But here are some numbers for anyone who doesn't beleive MJ was the biggest ball hog of all time...

Jordan, in his career played in 1,072 NBA games.
Wilt Chamberlain played in 1,045 NBA games.

2007-03-10 16:50:07 · update #1

Jordan attempted 24,537 shots in his career.
Wilt attempted 23,497 shots in his career.
That's 1,040 MORE shots by Jordan.

Jordan MADE 12,192 FG in his career.
Wilt made 12,681 FG in his career.
That's 489 FEWER Field Goals made.

But here's the kicker... Jordan took 1,040 more shots than Wilt did, but Jordan played 6,846 FEWER minutes than Wilt. Jordan was not nearly as durable an athlete as Wilt was, and played 41,013 (38.2 min/game) minutes compared to Wilt's 47,859 (45.8 min/game).

Wilt took just under 22.5 shots/game in his career.

Yeah, KOBE's a ball hog...

"Infatuation" with Jordan was an excellent choice of words...

There have been a number of times here on yahoo.answers that someone would ask 'who's the best basketball player ever', and you'll always get 15 or 20 people who just put "michael jordan' down as a two word answer, and have nothing to back up that opinion.

The only record Jordan holds is for highest per game scoring average for a career, at 30.11 (Wilt was at 30.06, both of which round to 30.1). But the reason Jordan's scoring average is higher is because he shot so much more.

Sometimes someone will say "MJ is the greatest because he had six rings and 5 MVPs"... so what?

neither of those are records, so what's the big deal? Jabbar won 6 mvp awards (and six rings)... Bill Russell also won 5 MVPs (along with ELEVEN rings)... so Jordan doesn't outclass either of those guys in any way...

Also, I looked at a list of the all time field goal percentage shooters in NBA history... Jordan is not in the top 50 in that category either, and he's supposed to be the greatest ever?? by what definition?

For my part as a statistical analyst, let me say that anyone who thinks that Michael Jordan is the greatest basketball player of all time is an idiot... there's absolutely no argument that can be made in his favor

not even the geniuses at ESPN can actually come up with a substanitve argument in Jordan's favor (although they all know that Jordan will never speak to them again if they ever go on record as saying anyone is/was better then M.J.)...

As for Kobe, he is already better and more accomplished than Jordan was at any similar age.

Time will tell how Kobe's career ends up...

And of course, we all know that Michael cheated on his wife a number of times over the years... not to mention his gambling problems... yeah, great role model there, guys. HAPPY?!?!?

2007-03-10 16:51:44 · update #4

The only thing that Kobe needs to improve is instilling confidence in his team mates, but irregardless he is the best in the NBA. His dunks look better than Lebron's. He shoots better and has a nicer handle. How exactly people are hating on this is beyond me.

I've seen Kobe do stuff that Lebron will never do and people can scream Kobe's a rapist and Lebron is MJ till they are blue in the face but it won't alter the truth. That being that Kobe is the best since Jordan and even if he fails from here on out it's because he is being mentally abused in this country right now.

Just say he didn't rape that girl. O.K. because of what he really didn't do he deserved to be robbed of the MVP award and his commercial pressence? And Shaq never got along with Penny Hardaway either that's why he went to the Lakers! And last year Kobe scored less and they won less. They said Jordan was a ball hog back in 1988 and he would never win a championship!

2007-03-10 16:52:14 · update #5

And Kobe's bad for cheating on his wife like oh say America's favorite white actor Brad Pitt! The kid above me is right in what he's saying about Wilt and Russell. But I think where Kobe and Jordan get the edge is in entertainment factor. After all the NBA is entertainment and they make more spectacular plays!!!

All you HATERS have fun going against me on this ONE...you can try everything, you cant beat the stats...

im only using the ROLE MODEL AS AN EXAMPLE...that's all everyone cares about know...bball is just not the same...

once again...where does LEBRON COME INTO THIS?? the kid was a one season sensation...he gives up too easily that's why i'll still stick with D-wade fans and Lebron fans are not bball fans...just followers of popularity not the game...

Is that a question? I agree with u on people who keep saying Kobe is a MJ copycat. He is not! He is a great basketball player. All basketball moves are similar, u never heard people says that u get plenty of rebounds and therefore u copy rodman. Gee ... Anyway he plays the game and he can score in an exciting way. Why don't we just enjoy the ball game and stop talking about role model? Leave their private lives out of the games.

Facts can back any argument up you can look at the statistics and argue for Russell, Chamberlain etc.. Especially your stats on the field goal attempted one. Where did Chamberlain play down low in the pain where he didn't have to shoot as much as Jordan did since well as you know centers don't venture more then 15 feet out. Jordan could do it all defend, rebound, pass, shoot, make better teammates out of the people with marginal talent a la Steve Kerr, BJ Armstrong, Bill Wennington, etc....
And for a guard Jordan shot .497 from the field compared to your hero Bryant who shoots about .452 for Bryant. So by your calculations for Bryant to get to Jordan's shooting range on how many field goals were attempted he's going to have way more then Jordan. That just blew away your argument.

Bryant doesn't play defense how many defense first teams has he been on 4 and two seconds Hmmm still not close. Jordan had this The 1987-88 NBA Defensive Player of the Year and record nine-time NBA All-Defensive First Team Also Holds the NBA record for most consecutive games scoring in double-digits 842 and to cap it off he averaged about 6 rebounds and 6 assists per game.

You can state all you want about your statistics but Jordan's statists don't lie unlike yours. Also do you think Jordan would have whined and cried if he had been picked by another team othe then the Bulls? I don't think so Bryant did when he was drafted by Charlotte. So no Kobe is nowhere near what Jordan will be.

Bryant the reason why it was such a big deal is Jordan left his private life private he admitted it and moved on and didn't attack anyone. The reason why Bryant becamse the center of attention is because of this His sexual encounter with Kate Faber apparently came to an end because she wouldn't let him ejaculate in her face.

I think after it's all said and done, Lebron James will surpass Kobe or MJ. Obviously, Jordan is done, and Kobe is in his prime, maybe just starting to slowly decline. He's still great, don' get me wrong. It's kind of unfair to compare Kobe and Lebron. Lebron is in his 4th year. Kobe is in his 11th year. LeBron is way ahead of where Kobe was at this point. You say you've seen Kobe do things Lebron can't do. I've seen things LeBron make plays that Kobe will never do. They do ahve different styles. Last year in the Playoffs, LeBron almost single handedly beat the Pistons. And he didn't have a dominant beast in the middle (Shaq). No one thought the Cavs would go 7 games with the Pistons. As far as morals, how can you compare Jordan and Kobe? They both cheated on their wives and lack any credibility to have character. They both suck as far as morals are concerned. Stay the straight and narrow Lebron.

J0k3r, looks like you've copied and pasted a lot of my comments (from other questions) in your question... but that's OK, anything that gets the word out is cool !

As for the argument that Jordan made marginal players better, it so happens that Horace Grant (who played 17 years in the NBA) and BJ Armstrong (who played 11 years) both made the All Star team in 1994... even though Jordan wasn't there to "make them better".... and, it just so happens that 1994 marked the ONLY All Star appearance for either of those guys. The only time they made the All Star team is when they DIDN'T have Michael Jordan for a teammate.

Scottie Pippen was the third Bulls player to make the 94 all star team...that year, Scottie became only the 2nd player in NBA history to lead his team in points, rebounds, assists, steals and blocked shots...all without Jordan there to make him better.

Wow. I couldn't even read all that! But lets assume your stats are right (you seem pretty knowledgeable).
Here are my points for Kobe...
Prolific scorer (81 is 81), great on d when he wants to be, he needs to take shots for his team to win (the name of his job is SHOOTING guard)
Here are my points against him: he had Shaquille with him so he didn't HAVE to take as many shots. (Jordan had NOBODY and when he came into the league, he was the man on his team within a month).
He DOES emuate Jordan (who wouldn't?)

http://images.usatoday.com/sports/_photos/2006/04/30/kobe-pose.jpg

and

http://members.aol.com/airjordan23site2/23jordan_wiz_030.jpg

btw the original pose came when he was still with the Bulls
And hes a snitch.

Heres my points for Jordan:
prolific scorer, lock down d when he wanted to
took a lot of shots from the shooting guard position.
Six championships
Against Jordan...
He cheated on his wife. Got news for ya buddy. Almost ALL pro athletes sheat on their wives. Most just don't get caught (esp like that)

Arguing against Jordan's actual skills is impossible. Just like arguing against Kobe's skills.

I respect the man's game, but I'll never respect a snitch as a man.

Oh, and nothing against Wilt and Russell, but those guys were freaks of nature in those days... you can't convince yourself that inserting Olojuwon into 1962 wouldn't have the same results. Reverse that and put those guys into the late 90's and i bet their numbers would suffer a little.

Kobe is being hated on because what he did was in the public eye, because of a woman who thought she could get a little publicity and/or money from it. MJ while he did cheat on his wife, the details weren't put out until his divorce. This was after he was loved by all. Kobe made himself seem like a spoiled brat early on, so the fans didn't endear themselves to him, and just waited for the first mistake he made to pounce on him. As far as the role model thing, I don't see athletes as role models. If I want to be better in a sport, I'll take after one athletically, but for a role model, I look to my dad.

Finally someone that realizes that Kobe isnt any more of a ball hog than the mighty michael jordan. Now Im not quite as harsh on Micheal Jordan as you I still believe Kobe is hated on way too much and I also believe the stats dont support MJ as the greatest player ever. Thanks great post. Finally someone with some research.

i don't see why it's bad to be a ballhog... i mean MJ was a huge ballhog, but he won games, won championships, and thats a good thing... im sure that if he hadnt hogged the ball so much, he wouldnt have been considered one of the best players ever... and yes kobe is a ballhog, but if that translates to winning games, then why not...
