Well, my brother stutters only when he gets too excited (either happy or angry) and tries to talk too fast. I do the same thing when I get REALLY REALLY REALLY upset. However, I know that that's not the case for all people. Generally though, if you have the person slow down and breathe deep, they won't stutter (at least, not nearly as badly as they had before).

It is definitely not a mental problem! Read about stuttering at www.stutteringhelp.org. There is no "cure" for stuttering but people who stutter can learn to control it by going to a specialist for therapy. For those who can't afford a speech therapist or who don't live near one who specializes in stuttering, they can get the book "Self Therapy for the Stutterer" and with determination, hard work, and practice can become very fluent.

Both of my boys started school stuttering. Their speech teacher tought them to slow down and take their time when they speak. Also to practice different sounds such as ch,sh, and so fourth. I have been told that its brought on by excitement, mental problem, don't think so, this something you outgrow if you have help, my oldest doesn't stutter anymore.

Speach therapists are great for helping with stuttering. Also, Psychiatrists can prescribe a medication - I won't give the name - that helps with stuttering.

I think that the best cure for people who stutter is speech therapy.

People who stutter don't stutter when they sing. Perhaps almost bursting into song when they are going to speak may be helpful.

James Earl Jones had a severe stutter.
I don't think you could classify it as a mental "problem". It's a speech disorder. Mel Tillis, Carly Simon ..
