Generally speaking they are the same it's just that graphic novel is a specific type of comic book.

The difference is that generally speaking, graphic novels are thought to be comics that are complex and long and often aimed at more mature audiences.

They are usually more thicker in pages then comic books and are bound by material that is stronger then normal comic books also.

An easy way to think of it is a novel that is in comic book form, that is usually a bit more complex then entertaining comic books that might be one shot stories or about different characters and what not, while graphic novels tend to be a long story with a beginning, middle, and end as a whole series and not short stories and vinettes.

Both Kevin and N K are correct. Graphic novels were essentially full story novels (with beginning, climax and resolution) published in pictures' frames like a comic.

Comics started with the several frames of storyline in the daily newspaper before evolving into the magazine-type medium we define as a comic here. The reason that this medium has become popular is due to the abnormal characters and minor climaxes, such as those found at the end of soap episodes which pull the audience back to the television or comic stores, eager to find out what happens next.

If u call a comic an episode of...let's say Baywatch, a graphic novel can be called a Baywatch Movie. A graphic novel is simply an avenue for comic writers and artists of whom have been working week after week to meet publishing deadlines to have an attempt to make their own movie, eg search: Frank Miller, Alan Moore. Being a 'novel' it also allows an avenue to express more mature themes like politics and sex.

Of course, you can now find graphic novels of our favourite comic characters like superman, batman, spiderman etc. In order to make happy the fans requesting for back copies of their favourite tales, companies like DC and Marvel have struck the goldmine of publishing a whole 'season' of comics as a graphic novel. Not only pleasing the current fanbase but also creating a wider audience by allowing them to catch up. Example is the Sandman comics by Neil Gaiman. It also allows collaborations btw writers and artists across the medium.

So ultimately, like a square is a form of a rectangle, a graphic novel is simply a long or, much more nowadays, a collection of comics served in a card cover. With a higher price tag but easier to maintain, however still valued less than the originally released comic form.

Graphic novels are a collection of issues of a comic book series and put into thick books. Like issues 1-6 ( and arc if you will) of a certain comic. Comic books are just single comic book issues. A regular edtion of a certain comic book.

Grapchic novels cost anywhere from 9.99- up in the 100 for dollars...comics are going for about 2.99 these days.

To sum things up..Graphic novels contain more then 1 issuse of a comic in it. A comic book is just a single issue. I know I own a ton of graphic novels.
