Why must some solid remain in contact with solution of a sparingly soluble salt in order to ensure equilibrium

Similar to your other question, if there is solid in the bottom of the container, you are sure the solution is saturated and at equilibrium. If there is no solid, there may be equilibrium or there may not be.
