From experience.....
If your not careful, knowing how big of a power supply you need for your system, dont have temp monitoring software, dont have voltage monitoring software, and have a little experience, you can cause severe damage, dont try this.
At most you will gain 5%-10% if your lucky, and thats if you dont burn anything up. There is no safe limit in overclocking, as different mobo's, processor's, and graphics can all play a huge roll in frying your whole system.....All it takes is a little to much on a power supply to overload it, and they are known for burning up every piece of hardware attached to the motherboard when the give out....

Just want to let you know, most overclockers will say, "if you havent burned something up today, your doing something wrong"!
Good luck!

I don't know if you know how to overclock so ill try to make it as easy as possibe. Overclocking is done by changing the front side bus or the multiplier of the Mobo. Alot of newer mobos and BIOS allow it, some dont. If your bios doesnt, try and find a mobo book. some have jumper pins to increase the front bus or multiplier. All intel motherboards are locked and cannot be overclocked. you shouldnt run your CPU over 45 Celsius. There are alot of programs that will tell you the temp of your CPU, mobo, etc. A good tutorial can be found almost anywhere by just searchig overclocking thru yahoo or maybe yahoo answers. Good luck.

First answer hit "The nail on the head".
But, this depends on many factors "IF" you not want to burn something up. Though I not overclock, I know my MOBO has the sophisticated BIOS and ability to protect my system in an Overclock-Overclock. So, it depends on your Processor ability and MOBO mainly. I not remember the safe % of overclock. But, I will say 10%. Tell us what processor you have and maybe we can say more safely.
Maybe this link can help;

Here also is my MOBO;

It not a gaming board (If, I were gaming) in my opinion, but, it do what I want.
