Do not sing a song from the show. Imagine me repeating that 3400 times. This is very important. However, do find a song that is similar to the ones in the show (in style, not necessarily content), especially the ones that Elphie sings.

It is safe to do songs from other musicals by the same playwright.

Also, if asked, be sure you tell them you are willing to take another part or a chorus part. And, if one is offered, TAKE IT. If you are only willing to take the lead, you will not be cast because it shows you have a big head. (Even if you don't think you do, they will think you do.)

Elphaba Thropp is a character that has a very evolutionary personality during the course of the musical. As the play opens, she is very shy, self-concoius, and withdrawn intellect. By the "Defying Gravity" she decides that she does not care what anyone thinks of her anymore, and wants to do what she thinks is right no matter the concequences. She is more bold and daring, in a rebelloius way. Her relationship with G(a)linda is very important to her, as it has molded her to become the character she is. You must have a very strong voice to play the part of Elphaba. Practice singing with emotion. Think that you are Elphaba when you prepare.... Feel her emotions. Practice acting and reacting.

DO NOT sing any songs from the show unless that's what you directer wants to to do, if that's the case pick a song which vary few are also going to be singing ( so you can pretty much forget about "Defying Gravity") this will make you stand out from all the other girls and make it easier for the director to remember you audition. Break a leg!
