I am 11 weeks and had my first pelvic exam while pregnant a few days ago and one of the tests I am not sure about. I took a couple of medical classes in school and know the basics of a pelvic exam but not this. It felt like the doctor "clipped" a bit of tissue from my cervix (maybe elsewhere) and I'm not sure what for. Didn't really think about it till now when I can't find any info on it. Anyone know what that was and what it's for? He also said I would probably spot but haven't. I figure that for a good thing but figured I'd throw it in. Thanks to anyone who can help, It is greatly appreciated.

Sounds like a coloposcopy and biopsy. Why he would do one without telling you i am not sure. It could have also been a pap test. I know when i went for my first prenatal visit my doctor asked me when my last pap was. since i had had one within a year and it was normal she didnt do one. He could have been doing that, but at the same time most doctors now use the swab instead of the good ol wooden tool they used to use (though some still do)

I would advise that you speak with him next time and make sure he explains EVERYTHING that he is doing. Sometimes doctors get wrapped up in getting things done they forget that we are robots... I have been through 4 OB/GYN's because of their bedside manner. "oh there is nothing to worry about' does not satisfy my questions.

What is colposcopy?

Colposcopy is a procedure used to detect abnormal cells and tissues of the cervix, vagina, and vulva. It is done with a colposcope — an instrument that looks like binoculars on a tripod. The colposcope has a magnifying glass that lets the clinician examine the surface cells.

Colposcopy is used to determine whether more tests or treatments are needed when abnormalities are observed.

It can be used after abnormal Pap or HPV (human papilloma virus) test results if the cervix looks abnormal during a pelvic exam to find out the cause of unexplained bleeding It is impossible to diagnose conditions of the cervix and vagina with the naked eye. With magnification, a clinician can better tell whether more tests are needed, or if there is no need for concern.

what your doc did was a pap smear. My doc did one of these with each of my pregnancies. They basically do this to make sure there are no abnormalities pertaining to your cervix. This can sometimes cause irritation to the surrounding tissue which MAY or MAY NOT cause you to spot a little. These tests are very routine and generally nothing to worry about. However if you have any questions or concerns you should contact your doctor. Good Luck.

As a mother of three the only thing i can come up with is a pap smear?? Has it been a year or more since your last pap? Even at that...I am not sure if i would be comfortable with this dr if he is not going to explain any better than that. Please call the dr and demand answers and if you are not 100% satisfied change dr if your insurance will allow. Good luck to you and your precious little baby:)

Sounds to me like a biopsy, which is usually what they do when you have an abnormal pap smear come back. BUT he for one should have told you about it and explained it to you. Also should have told you why it was being done.

At my 11 week exam I didn't do that, but I was also up to date on all my paps, which perhaps you weren't? Either way ask Him What and why the exam was. You need to know what is going on with your body

Good Luck!

I believe he performed a pap smear. He clipped your cervix, then ususally a Q-tip like instrument is used where they take cells from your cervix and send it to the lab to be tested. Because they are taking cell samples with the swab, it is possible your cervix my become irritated and thus some spotting may occur.
I do think it was strange that he did not say what he was going to do before he did it. My doctor always tells me exactly what she will do before she does it and I like it because I always know what to expect. Maybe you can bring that up to him so that you don't feel uncomfortable. Pap smears are very normal during your first prenatal visit though. They always like to make sure eveything is doing well for your baby.

I have never heard of a prenatal pelvic exam involving the clipping of cervical tissue. I would call and ask your doctor what he did, and what the purpose was (if it's standard practice, etc.). I do know of such an exam if there are abnormal PAP results. It can be called a cervical punch biopsy.

Pap test... I've had two kids and it is one of the first things they did for both pregnancies, and alot of times you do spot after a pap but no worries if you didn't.. good luck.

I believe they do this to check for cancer, but I can't see a doctor checking for something like this without telling you. I know a friend of mine had this done and she said it was very painful, are you sure that is what happened? They may have just performed a normal Pap, which I had done at my first visit.

The only thing i can think of that he would have done was a pap. They would test for cancer and precancer cells and things along those lines. at your next appointment you should ask him what exactly he did and why. If you dont want to wait until then you can always call the office and ask to speak with him about it.
