St. Patrick's day is March 17.
St. Patrick is the patron Saint of Ireland. The day was only a religious holiday (much like the rest of the Saint's days) until 1903 when Ireland passed a law making the day a state holiday.
For an interesting look at the history of the day, and the way in which it's celebrated around the world, check the reference below.

the date celebrated in america is March 17. however there is some controversy about whether this is the appropriate date. most saints in the catholic church have a day especially for them, usually a birth or death date. some people say that the 17 was st. patrick's birthday, others say the day of his death. some say both others say neither. but we still celebrate it as the 17. i think there is something else about the luck of the irish coming right after the ides of march(the15) when julius cesaur was killed.
