To begin click on "start", then "run" and type "msconfig". Press ok. Click on "Startup" tab. Uncheck names of those programs there that you do not need at startup. (These settings are reversible, if you uncheck something and later decide that it is necessary at startup; you can always come back and change the settings again.) Click Apply. Click close. Click on restart to reboot the computer. After reboot system configuration message window appears. Check the box that says "do not display this again", and press ok to close the box. This will keep programs from starting that use up alot of space on the processor and the ram, the first ones to go for me are yahoo messenger, and msn messenger, dont uncheck any of your antivirus or firewall programs, these are programs you want to start with windows........

Simple instructions

1. open the start menu

2. click "run program"

3. type "msconfig"

4. click on the "startup" tab

5. uncheck unwanted programs.

6. restart your computer

There's 3 places to check.

1) Your Startup folder. Click Start > All Programs > Startup, and look what's there. Delete whatever you don't want to start up. These are only shortcuts, so you're not deleting the program; you're just telling it not to start when the computer starts.

2) In your System Tray, lower right corner of your screen. Click or right-click the icon(s) for any program(s) you don't want running, and see if there's a Preferences option, or Settings, or something similar. This should bring you into the program settings, where you can tell it not to start when the computer starts.

3) In your registry, under HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Current Version\Run, and HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Current Version\Run. That's all I'll say about the registry, other than if you make 1 wrong move, you could render your entire computer useless. So if you don't know what the registry is or how to modify it, I'd stay out of it. If you still need more programs cleaned up than steps 1 and 2 above could take care of, then seek professional assistance.

If you have Windows XP, here is what to do:

1. Click on the start button
2. Click on Run
3. type msconfig and click on ok
4. Go to the far tab to the right
5. This will display what software loads on boot-up
6. simply uncheck all programs or files that you don't want to load on windows startup
7, Click on OK and reboot your computer as requested
8. Once the computer boots, there will be a message displaying that changes were made.
9. Put a checkmark in the box that says don't display the message on startup
10. close the window and continue working as normal.

I hope this helps you out.

I use the program "Chameleon Startup Manager" for it:
http://www.neosoft-tools.com/windows-startup-manager.htm
It disables any startup programs and fully controls startup by selecting the programs to be launched, while customizing the startup settings (ie how often and when programs should be launched, etc).
