I have an old laptop and I can not remeber what the password was to access Windows. you can not hit cancel.?

Anyone know how to get in to reset settings manually? xp proffesional!!!

I have tried all of those ideas, in safe mode it is still prompting me for a password. Its not the typical log on, there is a black screen behind the window and there is not a dropdown on user name!

Restart the laptop and press F8 repeatedly just as it begins to boot. If done correctly, you will see a black screen with white text, showing a boot menu. Choose the top item, Safe Mode, using the arrow keys. Click the Administrator account and see if it's not password protected. Chances are it isn't. Log in as administrator, go to Control Panel > User Accounts, click your username and select to Remove Password. Restart the computer, voila!

To place Active@ KillDisk Pro onto a floppy disk type the following at the command prompt:
COPY G:\KILLDISK.EXE A:
COPY G:\DOS4GW.EXE A:
The above assumes that the G:\ drive is the bootable CD-ROM drive and the A:\ drive is the floppy disk drive.
DOS4GW.EXE is a required file for Active@ KillDisk, Active@ UNERASER and Active@ Disk Image.

Log on as the administrator and remove the password.. If you made the administrator your primary account, you will not be able to to do anything.. You will have to reformat and reload windows..

You can recover it with Recovery CD you should of got when you bought the laptop.
Also try opening in Safe mode.

In an old laptop I use to do exactly that , cancel and it works just fine .
That laptop' OS is Win 98 .
