A united public behind the war would do nothing but kill more soldiers, and innocent civilians. that is not a tactic nor even a valid point. It might make the returning guys feel better but that is the only possible effect.
Many conflicts are best solved by not fighting. Every time a person is killed, a friend or relative seeks revenge it's part of their culture, same as it was here for many years...Hatfield ...McCoys etc. ...so we need to reduce co lateral damage. Hearts and minds are too late now most successful tactics would have to have been employed earlier in the conflict. Now the best that can be hoped for is that our troops keep a low profile.

Leaving would be one tactic. What in the world are we still doing there?
Most Americans who Polled agree that the war is a mistake. Terrorism and Weapons of mass destruction were not found there until we got there.
I hate to sound like a tree hugger, and you'll never find a more hotblooded redneck republican as I am, but there are times we have to say, "whoopsie daisy" and pick up our guns and the soldiers who are still living. Unless there's another good reason to be there of course.

Leaving would be my first choice. Then redeploying half of the Iraq troops to Afghan. Something about fighting the person that attacked me just makes sense.

The primary element that is needed is a corruption free, dedicated Iraqi military and police force. So far, that is not forthcoming...

A united and resolved commitment of the vast majority of American people to actually win this war would scare the bejesus out of the Islamic terrorists. And it would work.

I don't want to seem like a Saddam supporter. I'm not. But he had things working quite a bit better when he was there. Maybe we should do the things he did.

We're already winning, so I wouldn't change anything.
It has something to do with recognizing that our soldiers and marines are well trained and need for us to get the blazes out of their way and let them do their job.
