the water is clean. I was careful not to put him into shock, he's been fed, and he's not flaring up, just swimming around constantly hugging the tank. He's in a 1 gallon tank. A bigger one isn't an option at the moment (I just upgraded him to this). He acted the same in a 1/2 gallon as well. I'm hoping he's just hyper, but I've never had a fish before, so I thought I'd check.

Most Betta in the store are kept in such small containers that they can't swim much, so most people don't realize that Betta actually like to swim! If the water is warm and if it's the right pH and so on, he will most likely be swimming around. I had my Betta in a 10 gallon tank along with my Guppies, and he swam around a LOT. He eventually wore himself out though and I had to put him back in a smaller tank.

A 1/2 gallon container isn't ideal, but will work if you keep the water clean His behavior sounds like he sees his reflection in the tank. Either he is mellow or it distorted enough to not look betta like

Make sure no body is slipping crack into your fish bowl. Just kidding. Bettas are naturally energetic fish. It's just that being in such small containers all the time makes them lazy. You seem to have gotten a very very energetic fish. The bigger the tank you put him in, the better. It's totally fine. Nothing wront with your fish at all. Actually, it is very very healthy.
