Art is a relative term.

Just about everyone has at least some level of creative ability. It is just that most people's creative ability does not fall into what is classically called art.

The mathematician that creates an elegant solution to an obscure problem is just as much an artist for his creative solution as a sculptor is for creating a statue.

A wonderful quote I read once, unfortunately I forget the source and slightly altered for this question: We are all creators in this world. Some create good. Some create evil. Still others create excuses.

I was 'trained to be an artist' when I was 'growing up' and actually took 'college courses' when I was only 6 and 7 years old. I 'rebelled' and became a 'writer' and a 'psychologist' ... but I married a 'fine artist' ... and he doesn't do much 'fine art' any more, but he is a 'web developer' at a good company and that is 'art' too, in it's own way. I agree ... I couldn't live without 'creating art' of some kind ... and I also 'wonder' about how people live who 'can't' do that.

Sometimes the person has a handicap of shyness and that was my problem for many years! I always created something but for myself rather than sharing it with others because of that. To overcome this, I went to a drama school and got work as a waiter so I had to go to people to make a living! LOL. Then at age 48, I went up on stage and performed one song. I had the shakes all evening even after it was done! But I did not give up! I continued to write but I began performing with a group for the elderly. I believe also that no-one can go through life without creating. 15 years ago I did a mean phantom of the opera " MUSIC OF THE NIGHT! "...I had never seen the play or the new musical movie of course, but I wasn't too far off! Love of the arts conquers all!
It helped me conquer a stroke too! I never stopped. It all depends on motivation I guess.

One's opinion of what is considered art or artistic is relative to the individual. I mean, there are things that may be considered art by one person, but by another, they are not. I think everyone has some artistic ability.

What you have to remember is that art is a talent and not something you can gain by practice. I can do blueprints but I cannot draw freehand. I can appreciate music but cannot read it nor play an instrument.

If you have artistic ability consider yourself blessed with what you have but don't denigrate others for not having the same ability. We are all unique and not one of us has the same talents.
