Sealing all the cracks and holes through which they can enter is the first and most important step. It took me 2 tubes of caulk and a caulk gun to do my house and it's the best thing I ever did--as far as bug control is concerned. If you do a thorough job you will not only keep out the crickets, you will also cut down on the ants that get inside and ladybugs, etc. So before you start getting out all the bug-bombs go around your house and caulk every crack and crevice you can find. It's hard work but it's worth it. Then if you get some (depending on the number) you can spray them.

Hold off on the exterminator until you patch up the house--most of them won't tell you to caulk because they make a living spraying bug killer.

The other thing you can do (if you're not already doing it is put a dehumidifier down there. Insects like crickets dehydrate very quickly so they seek out damp or musty places where the humidity is high. Dry out your basement and it will make it less attractive to them.
