so i tried changing the cam gears on my care (1987 acura integra) basically the car used to run good. or atleast ran. its basically a tuner. but the problem im having is that i tried putting in the gears and i took off the upper part of the timing belt and then put in the gears, making sure they stayed at TDC at all times. but when i put the belt back on and turned on the car, it sounded like a lawn mower, it made huge amounts of noise and was unusually loud. im not sure whats wrong with it, i have a feeling that i might have moved the first piston out of its TDC position. and now i have no idea how to make it run good again, the car is infront of my house so i cant drive it anywhere without risking the engine. does anyone know what to do to fix this? thanks

it wasnt so much as a clattering sound, it just sounded like the engine was running at higher RPM's.

Pull the valve cover off if 4 Cyl. pull out #1 spark plug, gently turn engine with a ratchet the main crank pulley, move it till piston is at TDC and the mark on the pulley lines up with 0 next look to see if both valves are closed if so pull distributor cap see if rotor is pointing to #1 plug if so you should be to go if its duel cam then you need a manual to run you Thur the steps to set it up again.if it's not a close interface engine you will be OK anyway, you can ask your parts store I just don't remember I work on so many different ones I forget from one car to another unless I am looking at it.

If it made that much clattering sound you screwed up big time. I bet you did not the the repair manual. Next time get the one below.

Get a Haynes Repair Manual at the local Auto Zone or auto parts store in your area. It will troubleshoot and show you how to fix your vehicle. Also on the Auto Zone site has a section for vehicle maintenance.

Now you can still buy the book and try to see what you did wrong. If you ran the engine only a few seconds and turned it off maybe all is not lost. On my first 305 overhaul I did not set the tappets right and it was clattering away. But that was only noise and the oil was pumping out right so I just readjusted and good as new. Yours might be the same. But you gotta buy the book to do it right.

Anyway, here is the URL for the Auto Zone Repair Guide for your vehicle. Just click on the motor overhaul and get your printer out.

Shoot it, just shoot it !!!!!!!!!!!!

No really I believe you just ruined a perfectly good running engine, bent valves and all. See I had 2 Acuras before and I have worked on lots of Hondas, these are interference engines and have to be "correctly" timed or you risk ruining the head.

Sorry Dude there is no fix to what you've done other than buying a new head and hope you didn't ruin the pistons.
