Dude, whoever gave you that homework question is a moron. Lumping all of South America together for analysis is just plain stupid. Yes, most the people in South America know Spanish or Portuguese, but the cultures vary widely form one location to another.
The USA is another mix of contrasts. You can write entire books on how the Midwest differs from New England, or how Mississippi differs from Arkansas in their expression of American Southern culture.
