I know someone who wants to build homes for a living, what steps does he need to take, and/or where can he look to find out more information?

Thanks so much for your insight!

He will need a contractors license. Requirements are state specific so you'll need to check with your local state's Department of Commerce. In Tennessee, he would need to take a class, pass a test and pay a fee to receive the license. He would also have to complete annual continuing education and pay renewal fees. Also, in the state of Tennessee, a person who is not a licensed contractor can build one home a year.

He will need an education in General Contracting, a license in General Contracting, and typical knowledge of a nail and hammer LOL. Best bet to get some hands on experience is to get into carpentry and learn the trade.
