Predators are opportunists, meaning they will kill whatever is easiest to catch. The farmers have first hand experience with that being their calves, lambs, and pets, but the killers are more often packs of feral dogs rather than wolves. Absence of wolves and other predators allows rodents to overrun an area. Re-introduction is an effort to correct a mistake made 100 years or so ago that threw the delicate balance out of whack.

Wolves are predators and they can and will kill calves, lambs, foals, etc. I think that they are afraid that they will lose money if their livestock is killed.
