From the Menu Bar Select:
File --> Save As
When the Dialog Box comes up:
Give the file a name.
Drop down the Menu for "Save as type:"
SELECT "Text Document"

You can only save text files to a text format.
Save as
nameoffile.txt

use notepad or wordpad, if u r creating new file. or else from any other software try using SAVE AS and select PLAIN TEXT FILE format

Plain text would have the extension .txt
Also, if you save with wordpad, it may .rtf, or with word, .doc.
