I want to get something to help keep the bottom of my beta tank a little bit cleaner. I was thinking about a snail or crab. Which would you suggest and why?

My vote goes to snail because the snail can't hurt the betta and the betta can't hurt the snail. A crab on the other hand could do serious damage to a betta.

Get a cory cat, because it keeps the left overs off of the bottom of the tank, a crab would be nice however it will eat your beta, and the beta will eat the snail.

I would recommend a snail, but big enough so the fish can't eat it. Another good idea is to put a plant in the bowl to keep it cleaner. That also adds the the oxygen in the tank, and the betta can eat the plant which is very healthy for it.

The beta will attack the snail and the crab will snip at the fish. Get a plant that helps keeps the bowl cleaner.

Do a snail.. and get the biggest one you can.

Betta's are aggressive towards anything in their tank. Be it other betta's, other fish, or other inverts.
With the exception of most females, which can usually be kept in with a group.

A betta will more then likely eat the legs off of the crab.. i've personally seen them do it to aquatic frogs... not pleasant.

You can get nice sized snails on www.aquabid.com
Make sure to look for snails kept in a tank with no other fish. That will reduce your risk of having any bugs or disease transfer in to your tank with your betta =)

An apple snail would be great if the tank is big enough you have to keep in mind though that snails don't eat poo so you will still need to clean that yourself. The snail will also need to be feed, unlike what most people think they don't live on algae. They also poo alot so you may have to actually clean more.

bETTAS usally braek the shell that snails are in and eat them. I'm not really sure about crabs. Why don't you get a bottom feeder fish?

You can't put anything in with a Beta because it is territorial and it will attack anything you put in with it to show its dominance, so you should clean it every 2-3 weeks...
