Well, I heard at one time, don't know if it is true or not, but they used sheep intestine as a condom....

Usually using a small sponge soaked in an alcohol based liquid (like brandy) or lemon juice as a barrier. If in a tropical area, some woman used a lemon or lime half that was scooped out as a sort of diaphragm. Condoms were in existence but it probably wasn't easy to get the customer to use them.

In the olden days, women for birth control would use stuff like coins, sponges, wads of cloth and other items that will fit and be relatively comfortable. They did have condoms back then, to some degree, but they were expensive and not totally trustworthy.

Gee, me the addict of Deadwood I have no idea. I know they had abortions and some stuff they drank which the doc gave them. I am quite sure a lot of those girls died, I mean they had syphillis and other illnesses. What a job they had and all that wonderful non existing hygiene. Yack!
