It was the best 50s to 80s in my opinion. You'd also want to check out 60s as well because thats the best decade for rock. Some good bands from 60s to 80s are
The Beatles, The Hollies, Elvis Costello, Bob Dylan, The Who, Paul Revere and the Raiders, Wings, The Beach Boys, Rod Stewart, Tom Petty, The Byrds, Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, The Eagles, The Rolling Stones, U2, The Police ect ect. It would take a while to check out all the bands so I recomend internet radio cause that tells you what the song is called and whos it by.
Here are my favorite classic rock stations.

You can't call it a Classic Rock list without The Rolling Stones, The Grateful Dead, and some representation from the Southern Rock groups: the Allman Brothers Band (Live at the Filmore is a great place to start); The Marshall tucker Band, and Lynyrd Skynyrd.

Don't forget The Clash, The Kinks, The Police, Paul Macartney and Wings, John Lennon, Molly Hatchet, Moody Blues, Eric Clapton, The Stones, The Ramones, Lynard Skynard, Elvis Costello, Blondie, .... It's all way better than anything being put out today. Rock made since the 'hair bands' just sucks in general. They've figured out that people don't really care if they have talent or not, they write lyrics to appeal to people or bang out the same three chords and people will buy it.

KISS, Trooper, Boston, Blondie, Rush, Cheap Trick, ELO, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Molly Hatchet, Blackfoot, .38 Special, Yes, Styx, Deep Purple, Steve Miller Band, Heart, Alice Cooper (who did it BEFORE Ozzy or Marylin), Crosby, Stills, Nash (CSN....or CSNY (adding 'Young')), The Eagles, Doobie Brothers, Bruce Springsteen, Ambrosia, Gino Vanelli, Toto,
The Police, The Kinks, Kansas, Journey, LeRoux.....honey, the list goes on and on and on.....
Listen and take note how each band carried their own sound(s) and took pride in their studio recording sound; they took equal pride in their concert sound and shows, too.
Something you will NEVER find much of with today's "new" or alternative rock bands.....thank GOD Rap is dying....!!!
Also note the album artworks from these 70s bands: each one a work of art suitable for hanging on a wall; far cry from today's "slap and paste" garbage.
