much ado is hilarious... I love Beatrice...

If you like Beatrice/Benedict in much ado check out love's labour's lost - it's not as good, but there is still some great witty banter (the parallel pair are Berowne and Rosaline)

But my personal favorites are:
Comedy - Twelfth Night
why? written right before the great tragedies (Hamlet, Othello, etc) it's Shakespeare's middle period, when he was at his best - characters clicking, in command of his writing skills, tightened play structure - firing on all cylinders, basically. Twelfth night has no clunky characters and is magic from start to finish. i would say hilarious from start to finish, but the Malvolio subplot where he winds up in the basement (and has his scene with Feste) anticipates the scene with blind Gloucester in King Lear, and is more disturbing than funny. Zany screwball comedy, beautiful poetry, strong characterization, and a deep undercurrent of something darker - wonderful.

Tragedy - Hamlet. or Othello. Or Macbeth. Or King Lear. Or Romeo and Juliet.

Okay, Hamlet. But they're all maniacally wonderful. I just never get sick of Hamlet. There is something new every time I read it.

History - Richard III
Personal fav because it was actually the first shakespeare play I saw done by really fantastic actors (RSC in england when I was 15.) stuck in my mind ever since. so the creepy scene where richard woos/seduces lady anne, the princes in the tower and 'my kingdom for a horse!' beat out the runner up Henry V, "once more into the breach" and Falstaff.

Problem Play - Measure for Measure. It's not a comedy, and not a tragedy, and it's not perfect, but it's really freaky good. The stuff between Isabella and Angelo (he tries to force her into sleeping with him, she refuses, saying "I will proclaim thee, Angelo - Look for't!" and he softly replies "who will believe thee, isabel?") is a chilling look at the abuse of power and very, very modern sounding.

Macbeth.

It's a very dark play. But somehow that's attractive to me. The play is about basic sins such as greed and vanity leading to inevitable doom. It's so well put together that way, it rivals the Greek tragedies and Macbeth comes out with that aura that surrounds the tragic hero.
A delightful masterpiece.

I really like Macbeth because it had a lot of betrayal and is a classic Shakespeare tragedy.
