Generally in the 10th grade because most schools give the PSAT. The second reason is because Sophmore year is the middle of your high school career and you should be looking at the past (failed classes,make-ups,etc) and lookign to the future(what colleges you want oto go, your major, the college's grade requirements, etc) The fact that you are addressign this before anyone tell is good and deserves and pat on the back. The best to prepare for SAT is to take the PSAT usually through your school and see how you score and what your weak areas are. this way colleges and other higher learnign institutions will see your scorea snd want you as a perspective student.

Heh, I'm a junior, and I just took the SAT today. I would say that the amount of time I actually spent studying and practicing for the test would be the 4 and a half or so hours I spent for the PSAT sophomore and junior year (got a 207 and 98%ile this past year, hoping for NMSQT qualification!) and the hour or so I spent actually sort of flipping through that prep book I got...

But to me, studying material for the test is a waste of time, because I know pretty much all the material already. The only trick to the test is to know how they phrase questions down at the collegeboard/ETC and what they're actually asking you (which I learned by taking the PSAT).

But hey, this test all depends on who's taking it...for me, I never study, and yet I still pull a 4.3 GPA...but some people HAVE to study and review the material over and over again, so my answer for you is to determine your own test taking abilities and decide for yourself when the best time to start prepping for the SAT.

Start now by working on your vocabulary skills. If you didn't take the PSAT this year, you may want to find an SAT Test Prep book that has several practice exams in it. There are tricks to doing well on these tests that can help raise your score significantly.

The bottom line though, is that if you are concentrating at school and challenging yourself appropriately, you should score well on the ACT/SATs.

Shoot for a composite of 26, or better. You may get some help on tuition, with a high score. Maybe a full scholarship.
