This is going to depend on which model Cayman you compare to which model 911 (referring just to current 911s, since they've been around since 1964). And then there is the issue of what you mean by "faster."
The Cayman has an exceptionally rigid chasis, and fantastic balance. It's a great car to drive and is very forgiving and predictable in it's handling. The car is NOT detuned, though the chasis is certainly capable of handling more power should Porsche ever decide to put a more powerful engine in to the car. Power will likely increase in small amounts over the lifespan of the current car, though it will always remain less than the 911 since that is where it sits in the product line.
While the current 911 is much more forgiving and predictable than it's forefathers, it can still present more of a challenge for some drivers than the Cayman. It's oddly balanced by comparison as well, though in some cases this can be it's strength, allowing it to easily do what is near impossible for some other cars (though taking more driver skill for almost all tasks). It's a more developed platform than the Cayman both because even the current version has been around longer, and because of it's use in motorsports bringing more feedback and external development to the product.
As to which is faster? Comparing the Cayman S to the regular Carrera could produce some interesting results. All in all, the cars would be fairly evenly matched. On city streets, the 911 would probably be a little quicker going stoplight to stoplight. On a track, the Cayman S would be better able to preserve momentum and it would gain a slight advantage. But if you were to compare the standard Cayman against a Carrera S, or worse, a GT3, you'd have a 911 that would triumph in every measurable area of performance.

Actually...
Cayman is smaller.
During testing the track times of the Cayman was quicker than the 911. However Porsche de-tuned the Cayman due to this fact. If they did not de-tune it then it would beat the 911 which is a more expensive car.
Currently they will produce a tuned Cayman. However it still wont be as quick as the first tested Cayman. This will save Porsche's 911. Porsche doesn't want you to know this or everyone would buy the Cayman and tune it. A Cayman is similar to the Lotus Elise in size and agility. Much better handling than the 911 if tuned correctly.
Finally, your question is which is faster... The original Cayman is faster (in track time) however 911 is quicker (acceleration). Current Cayman however is not the same as the original.

Or opt for the Cayman R. It's a bit more, um, sporting. You might also look at the 911 GTS. Awesome car. But if it were me, and I had the money, I'd get a 911 over a Cayman any day.

the 911s tend to be faster, but obviously if you use a 1967 911 itll clearly be slower.

The 911 is smaller and therefore definatly faster. Although a 911T would be one of the fastest.
